Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the withdrawal of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent from Kazakhstan would begin in the next two days.
“Overall, the acute phase of the counter-terror operation is over. The situation is stable in all regions. Therefore, I declare that the main mission of the CSTO peacekeeping force has been successfully completed," Tokayev said, as quoted by TASS, Tuesday (11/1/2022).
“The gradual withdrawal of the CSTO unified peacekeeping contingent will begin in two days. The process of withdrawing the contingent will take no more than 10 days," Tokayev said while speaking at the Mazhilis (lower house) on Tuesday.
He noted that the coup attempt in Kazakhstan had failed. "The state coup attempt, the country's territorial integrity efforts have failed. We have defended Almaty and other indigenous (regional) centers together, as one country. They will be restored as soon as possible." said Tokayev.
Tokayev also stated that not all law enforcement agencies remain faithful to their duties.
"In a number of cities, heads of departments of the National Security Committee left the premises without engaging in combat, leaving weapons and classified documents there, despite having sufficient combat armaments," Tokayev said. He also admitted that he would present a package of political reforms in September.
"In my next speech (to the people) in September, I will present a new package of political reforms that will be prepared based on extensive constructive dialogue with the public and experts," Tokayev explained.

According to him, Kazakhstan will continue its journey towards political modernization.
Earlier this year, protests erupted in several cities in Kazakhstan and escalated into mass riots with government buildings being searched in several cities a few days later. The ensuing violence left scores of people injured, with fatalities also reported.
Next, Tokayev turned to the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) asking for help from the Russian-led bloc. As a result, peacekeepers have been deployed to Kazakhstan.
