The European Union on Tuesday (11/1/2022) condemned North Korea's recent missile launch. The European Union also called on Pyongyang to refrain from similar actions that undermine international security.
"The European Union condemns the missile launches by the DPRK (North Korea), which occurred most recently on January 5 and 11," Nabila Massrali, spokeswoman for the European External Action Service, said in a statement.
The statement said, "North Korea's pursuit of illegal weapons systems is a threat to international peace and security," and called on the country to comply with UN Security Council resolutions and refrain from similar actions.
The bloc also urged Pyongyang to engage in a transparent and verifiable denuclearization process. The European Union reiterated that it will continue to impose sanctions on North Korea until it engages in non-proliferation.
Apart from the European Union, the United States has also urged North Korea to stop the "provocations".
The call comes after North Korea's recent test launch of what regional powers have called an advanced hypersonic missile.
"We think the DPRK (North Korea) has an obligation to stop this provocation, to show that they are also interested and serious about this dialogue," said US State Department spokesman Ned Price, as quoted by Anadolu Agency, Wednesday (12/1/2022)..
According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, North Korea on Tuesday tested a ballistic missile using cutting-edge technology. This is North Korea's second weapons test earlier this year.
The previous launch occurred on January 5 last. Later, North Korea reported that it had tested a supersonic missile that flew 700 kilometers and hit its target.
South Korea's military later said the projectile fired on January 5 flew less than 700 kilometers with a maximum speed of Mach 6 at an altitude of less than 50 km.
