Trump Shares Details of Meeting With Zelenskyy at Vatican |
Former President Donald Trump has shared what he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed during their widely viewed meeting at the Vatican, where both leaders attended the funeral of Pope Francis.
Speaking during a NewsNation town hall on Tuesday night, Trump said, “I told him it would be a good thing if we could make a deal, because Russia is much bigger and stronger.”
This was the first time the two leaders met in person since their tense Oval Office encounter back in February. Official statements from the White House and Ukraine called the meeting "productive" and "symbolic," but did not offer many specifics.
Zelenskyy later posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “We discussed a lot one-on-one. I hope we see results from what we talked about — saving lives, achieving a full ceasefire, and ensuring lasting peace. It was a symbolic meeting that could become historic if we succeed.”
Although few details were released, Trump told reporters earlier that Zelenskyy once again asked for more weapons from the U.S.
“He told me he needs more weapons — he's been saying that for three years,” Trump said. “We’ll see what happens. I’m surprised and disappointed that Russia bombed those places after we had discussions.”
Trump also suggested that Zelenskyy may be open to giving up Crimea to reach a peace agreement — a claim likely to spark debate, as Zelenskyy has repeatedly insisted he would not agree to any deal that involves surrendering Ukrainian territory to Russia.
