Amazon.com Inc. will close six Whole Foods store locations in four states. It comes nearly two months after closing dozens of bookstores and gift shops across the country.
Of the more than 500 stores nationwide, the locations closed were in Montgomery and Mobile, Alabama; Tarzana, California; Brookline, Massachusetts; and the Englewood and DePaul neighborhoods in Chicago. Five stores will close on May 6 and the Englewood location will close in the coming months.
"As we continue to position Whole Foods for long-term success, we regularly evaluate the performance and growth potential of each of our stores, and we have made the difficult decision to close six stores," a Whole Foods spokesperson said. /4).
Earlier, Amazon said it had excess warehouse space and employees when explaining its unexpected first-quarter loss and bleak outlook for the current period. Online sales fell 3% in the quarter.
Revenue from physical stores, the bulk of which is Whole Foods, was one of the few bright spots of Amazon's quarterly results, with sales of $4.59 billion, up 17% from a year earlier.
The Seattle-based company made its biggest move into physical retail in 2017 with its $13 billion acquisition of Whole Foods Market.
Since then, the company has also launched its own Amazon Fresh supermarket and now has more than 20 locations in California, Illinois, and the mid-Atlantic region.
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said the decision to close two stores in her city was disappointing. He expressed concern for the workers as well as the loss to some residents in the community at risk of having few other options for grocery shopping.
"Together with the community and local elected leaders, my administration will work to transform this location in a way that continues to serve the community and support the businesses in the vicinity," Lightfoot said in a statement.
