Russia: Ukraine Will Blow Up Its Own Nuclear Reactor And Blame Russia For Perpetrators

Russia's Defense Ministry on Monday (7/3), said Ukrainian troops would soon detonate a nuclear reactor located at the National Research Center of the Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology.

In its official statement, the ministry suspects that Ukraine will later accuse the Russian Armed Forces of launching a missile attack on the experimental nuclear system.

"Ukrainian Security Forces together with the Azov battalion guerrillas are planning provocations with possible radioactive contamination in the area near the city of Kharkov. The Ukrainian military and the Azov battalion militants are planning to blow up the reactor and accuse the Russian Armed Forces of," the Russian Defense Ministry said, as quoted by TASS.

In addition, the ministry also reported that on Sunday (6/3) a number of foreign journalists had arrived in Kharkov and produced stories accusing Russia of creating an environmental disaster.

Russia controls the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine and Europe

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (NPP) in Ukraine reportedly caught fire on Friday (4/3) after being hit by an attack by Russian troops. The nuclear power plant is also the largest in Europe of its kind.

Dmytro Orlov, mayor of Energodar which is where the nuclear power plant is located, said there had been heavy fighting between local troops and Russian troops. He added there were casualties without providing details.

"As a result of continuous enemy fire on buildings and units of Europe's largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant caught fire," Orlov said in a message on social media, as quoted by Reuters.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on Sunday that Russian forces have now deployed special staff to run the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is now said to be under the full control of Russian troops and its lines of communication to the outside world have been restricted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday accused Russia of seeking nuclear terror and repeating the Chernobyl disaster.

"No country other than Russia has ever fired on a nuclear power unit. This is the first time in our history. In the history of mankind. A terrorist state is now using nuclear terror," Zelensky said.
