Last month, a new rifle system released by Sako Ltd in the form of the M23 Sniper Rifle was procured to the Finnish Defense Forces Logistics Command.
It was also reported by Zonajakarta.com on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, that Finland and Sweden had signed a technical agreement regarding the joint acquisition of weapons systems and technology at the end of last year. In addition, the signed agreement also allows the joint acquisition of bullets.
“The acquisition of this rifle system is an important step, which allows for the future acquisition of concrete and joint small arms between Finland and Sweden.
The aim of the two countries is to achieve an appropriate cost value, as well as improve the safety of supplies and interoperability with each other," Peltoniemi said regarding the arrangement.
The acquisition was preceded by development cooperation between Sako Ltd and the Finnish Defense Force in 2020-2022 in line with the letter of intent between the Finnish Defense Force and Sako Ltd.
Infantry Inspector and Colonel Rainer Peltoniemi concluded that the project was building a completely new endeavor, replacing most of the currently operational 7.62 Rifle 85s sniper rifles, as well as completely replacing the 7.62 Sniper Dragunov.
Based on the AR10/15 model semi-automatic rifle in the 7.62NATO caliber, the M23 Rifle system features advantages which compare to those in use today, such as mounting weapons equipped with versatile accessories, such as tactical night sights and suppressors, increased targeting accuracy, and lightweight and ergonomic design.
The semi-automatic M23 Sniper Rifle is equipped with an optical sight as well as a precision bullet which can hit different targets up to a distance of 800 meters.
The M23 rifle has a simpler design in its weaponry, and it is recommended for use by the outstanding shooter, namely the infantry jaeger. The increased range on this weapon reaches up to 600 meters.
