Philippine navy awaiting u.s nod on transfer of 14 cyclone-class patrol ships. The philippine navy is awaiting the official approval of the united states government regarding the transfer of its newly decommissioned Cyclone-Class Patrol Vessels to the country.

While waiting for the said approval PNA already requested the price and availability PNA of the CCV in order to identify the acquisition cost for planning slash programming purposes of the end user. The us government has an outstanding offer regarding the cyclone class patrol vessels to the pn under its Excess Defense Article (EDA) program. The cyclone class patrol ships are a class of united states navy coastal patrol boats. Most of these ships were launched between 1992 and 1994. 

The primary mission of these ships is coastal patrol and interdiction surveillance an important aspect of literal operations outlined in the navy's strategy forward from the sea. These ships also provide full mission support for u.s navy seals and other special operations forces. The cyclone-class ships are assigned to naval special warfare.

In last september 2021 the decision was made to recall all of the remaining ships of the class due to fatigue damage to their hulls. The class was designed for a lifespan of roughly 15 years. All but the newest member of the class USS-Tornado, PC-14 have been in service longer. The vessels will be inspected and a decision will be made whether to refit them or to decommission the ships. The remaining three ships of the class are slated to be transferred to naval station Mayport in Florida to work primarily with drug interdiction work with u.s naval forces southern command us Nafso.

The philippine navy has already expressed its intent to acquire these ships as early as december last year. At present the philippine navy has one cyclone class patrol vessel in its service formerly the X-USS cyclone. Cyclone was eventually sold to the philippine navy in january 2004 as part of a u.s military aid package to the philippines in an effort to bolster interdiction and counter-terrorism capabilities. She was re-christened brp general Mariano Alvarez PS-38 on march 8/2004 in honor of a revolutionary general in the philippine war of independence against spain.

The u.s navy cyclone class patrol ships are a class of 14 coastal patrol boats originally 16 but two were canceled. With 55 meters long, 7.6 meters beam and maximum draft of 2.3 meters they were powered by four paxman diesel engines with maximum speed of 35 knots and they have a range of between 2000 to 2500 nautical miles. The philippine navy has expressed its interest to acquire the newly decommissioned cyclone-class patrol vessels of the united states u.s navy.

The PN has manifested its interest in the decommissioned Cyclone-Class Patrol Vessels (CCPV) of the us navy as a stop gap to the decommissioned legacy pn ships. As to how many that depends on the seaworthiness and efficiency of the CCPV's that will be offered and this will be determined by the PN joint visual inspection team pn chief, vice admiral Giovanni Carlo Bacordo said in a message to the philippine news agency thursday night.

Bacordo said he will be happy if the PN acquires at least five of these cyclone-class patrol vessels which will be a boost to its fleet. At present the pn has one cyclone class patrol vessel in its service the brp general Mariano Alvarez PS-38 formerly the X-USS Cyclone which was transferred to the PN in 2004. The cyclone-class patrol ships are a class of u.s navy coastal patrol boats consisting of some 14 ships. These vessels weigh around 328.5 long tons and have a length of 179 feet, a beam of 25 feet and a draft of 7.5 feet. Their maximum speed is placed at 35 knots and they have a range of between 2000 to 2500 nautical miles. Cyclone-class patrol vessels are armed with two 25 millimeters auto cannons and several high-powered machine guns.
