Ukraine Arrests Pro-Russian Figure, Vladimir Putin's Most Prominent Ally

Ukraine on Tuesday (12/4) said it had arrested Russian President Vladimir Putin's most prominent ally.

In February, Ukraine said Viktor Medvedchuk, the leader of the Opposition Platform, the For Life Party, escaped from house arrest after authorities opened a treason case.

The pro-Russian figure, who says Putin is his daughter's godfather, has denied wrongdoing. A spokesman for Medvedchuk could not immediately comment on the Ukrainian arrests.

"Pro-Russian traitors and agents of Russian intelligence services, remember, your crimes have no statutory restrictions," Ukraine's Security Service said in a Facebook post, posting a photo of Medvedchuk in handcuffs.

"We carried out this lightning-fast and dangerous multi-level special operation," said Ivan Bakanov, head of Ukraine's security services.

A spokesman for the Kremlin or the Office of the President of Russia told the TASS news agency that he had seen the photo but could not confirm whether it was genuine.
