Turkey's Defense Ministry announced Monday that its military has launched ground and air strikes against Kurdish insurgents in northern Iraq.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Turkish jets and artillery struck targets belonging to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) before troops crossed into Iraq by land or flown in by helicopter.
The Turkish Defense Ministry did not provide information on the number of troops and fighter jets involved in the attack earlier this week.
Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said fighter jets had successfully attacked shelters, bunkers, caves, tunnels, ammunition depots and PKK bases.
"Our operations are continuing successfully, as planned. The targets set for the first phase have been achieved," Akar said.
Akar stressed that his party is determined to save Turkey from the terror catastrophe that has plagued the country for 40 years, and will neutralize the terrorists to the end.
In his report, Akar confirmed, the Turkish military attack this time was purely aimed at terrorists and had as much as possible avoided the impact on civilians as well as cultural and religious sites.
The PKK has been designated a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union. The group started an insurgency in Turkey's Kurdish-majority southeast in 1984. Since then, tens of thousands of people have lost their lives.
Turkey has conducted numerous cross-border air and ground operations against the PKK over the past few decades. The latest attacks have focused on the Metina, Zap and Avashin-Basyan regions of northern Iraq.
The latest attack is also part of Turkey's ongoing operations in Iraq and Syria against the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, which Ankara labels a terrorist group.
