India Develops Newest IRST For The Existence Of Sukhoi Su-30MKI Fighter Jets

India has again recorded an important thing in the effort to be independent of defense equipment, this time related to the existence of the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet. Instead of worrying about the future continuity of the Sukhoi fleet as experienced by many countries, India is reportedly ready to design its own latest Infrared Search and Track System (IRST) for the Su-30MKI.

Quoted from eurasiantimes.com (28/4/2022), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) have announced a joint development and production program for the long-range dual-band IRST.

The IRST system, which will be developed by two large Indian companies, will be a product of high-end strategic technology in the field of defense avionics and technically compete with IRST systems in the global market with Television Day Camera, Infrared & Laser sensors in a single window for tracking aerial targets. into the air and air to the surface.

Former Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Vijainder K Thakur said, “The Long Range Dual Band IRST for the Su-30MKI developed by HAL and BEL will feature a Focal Point Array (FPA) sensor in two bands (two bands). This will facilitate better target recognition.”

Generally, targets in the air will radiate heat at different infrared wavelengths. Dual-band IRST improves target identification, tracking and jamming capabilities. And it is ensured that this IRST device can operate in day and night conditions.

The dual band IRST will operate in the 8-12 m LWIR band and 3-5 m MWIR band. Hot objects such as exhaust ports are more prominent in MWIR, while fuselage and missile bodies are more prominent in LWIR (Long Wave Infrared Cameras). Water vapor absorption dominates in LWIR, while carbon dioxide absorption dominates in MWIR (Medium wave infrared). The solar reflection is significant in MWIR but can be suppressed in LWIR.

IRST allows warplanes to identify and track enemy aircraft based on their heat signatures and then attack them with heat-seeking air-to-air missiles.

This device also allows aircraft to track enemy aircraft without exposing themselves to passive detection by avoiding the use of radar (radar silent). Air-to-air missiles with longer range IRSTs and longer-range air-to-air missiles will dominate aerial warfare.

Initially, through the 2016 Defense Procurement Procedure (DPP), the Indian Ministry of Defense first requested the development of a domestic IRST system. In 2017, the government issued a questionnaire to Indian companies interested in developing this system.

Companies that will be involved are asked to ensure 40 percent Indigenous Composition (IC). Automatic tracking capability, identification of ground targets, video data output and direct connection to Multi-Function Display are among the technical requirements requested by the Indian Ministry of Defence. The developer was also asked whether the IRST system would later require structural changes to the Su-30MKI.

With the production of domestically produced IRSTs, it can bring several strategic advantages, such as IRST will be supported by operational software that will be coded independently, allowing for improvements, better sensor fusion (correlation of IRST targeting data with the acquired targeting data), direct integration with new weapon systems, and much more.

Located in front of the cockpit, the Sukhoi Su-30MKI is currently equipped with the Russian-made OLS-30 IRST ((Izdeliye 52Sh) device. The OLS-30 is a combined IRST/LR device that uses a cooled broadband sensor. The detection range of this IRST is up to 185 .2 km, while the laser ranger is effective up to 3.5 km.
