Admiral Grigorovich Class – Advanced Frigate Mainstay of Russia's Black Sea Fleet

The name of the frigate Admiral Essen (Admiral Grigorovich Class) has been in the spotlight in recent days, especially after the Russian military claimed to have shot down a Bayraktar TB2 drone with the Shtil missile system off the coast of Crimea.

Not many know that the Admiral Grigorovich Class, which is a development of the Talwar class, has also been ordered by India for two units.

The Admiral Grigorovich Class, also known as the Krivak IV class (Project 11356R/М), is no doubt the mainstay of the striking force in Russia's Black Sea Fleet. Built by Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, so far six units have been ordered by the Russian Navy, with three units now operational in the Black Sea Fleet.

The lead of this class of frigates is the Admiral Grigorovich which was launched on March 14, 2014 and joined the Russian Navy on March 11, 2016.

While the Admiral Essen became the second ship in this class, launched on November 7, 2014 and officially served in the Russian Navy on June 7, 2016. And the third ship, Admiral Makarov was launched on September 2, 2015 and served in the Russian Navy on December 27, 2017.

Specifically for Admiral Essen, he has the nickname Nikolai Essen with hull number 751. The weapons package contained in this frigate is quite complete, consisting of 1× 100 mm A-190 Arsenal naval gun, 8 (2×4) UKSK VLS cells for cruise missiles Kalibr, 24 (2×12) 3S90M VLS cells for 9M317M (Shtil) medium-range guided missiles, 2× AK-630 CIWS fast-reaction cannons, 8× Igla-S/Verba short-range guided missiles, 2× double 533 mm torpedo tubes and 1× RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launcher.

In the package, this frigate carries one Ka-27 anti-submarine helicopter.

While the cruising range reaches 8,900 km at a speed of 14 knots. Manned by 200 personnel, Admiral Essen has the endurance to sail for 30 days.

From a combat reputation, Admiral Essen has been deployed during Russia's military operations in Syria. In May and September 2017, the frigate launched Kalibr cruise missiles against ISIS bases. And during Russia's 2022 military operation into Ukraine, these frigates have been involved in rocket attacks on Ukrainian cities.
