Russian Air Strike Hits Apartment in Ukrainian Capital, 1 Dead!

A Russian airstrike on a residential building in the Ukrainian capital killed at least one person Monday, as Moscow maintains its devastating offensive ahead of a new round of talks.

Reuters reported that the attack took place as Russian troops closed in on the city of Kyiv and continued to besiege the city of Mariupol. Mariupol officials said nearly 2,200 people were killed.

“At 07.40 am, one person was found dead in a nine-story apartment building in Obolon District, Kyiv emergency services said in a statement. In addition, nine people were injured and three of them were hospitalized.

Representatives of Ukraine and Russia will meet by video conference on Monday, an adviser to the Ukrainian president and a spokesman for the Russian President's Office, or Kremlin, said before the latest attack.

Diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine have stepped up with both sides citing progress, even after Russia attacked a military base near the Polish border and fighting raged elsewhere.

A barrage of Russian missiles hit Ukraine's Yavoriv International Peace and Security Center, a military base just 25 km from the Polish border that previously housed NATO military instructors, killing 35 people and wounding 134.

The Russian Defense Ministry said up to 180 "foreign mercenaries" and a large number of foreign weapons were destroyed. Reuters could not independently verify the casualties reported by both sides.

Thousands of people have died since February 24, when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched what he described as a special military operation to rid Ukraine of dangerous nationalists and Nazis.
