Peace Force Presence in Ukraine Leads to Direct Russia-NATO Clashes

The Russian government on Wednesday (23/3) condemned Poland's proposal to send international peacekeepers to Ukraine. Russia warns that it could lead to a direct clash between Russian and NATO forces.

Poland said last Friday that it would formally submit a proposal for a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine at the next NATO summit.

Asked about the initiative, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "It would be a very reckless and very dangerous decision."

He told reporters on a conference call that possible contact between Russian and NATO forces could have clear consequences that would be difficult to remedy.

Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24 in what it called a special operation to undermine its southern neighbor's military capabilities and root out what it called dangerous nationalists.

Ukrainian troops have put up a tough fight and the West has imposed sweeping sanctions on Russia in a bid to force it to withdraw.

Speaking in Kyiv last week, the leader of Poland's ruling party Jaroslaw Kaczynski said: "I think it is necessary to have a peacekeeping mission - NATO, maybe some broader international structure - but a mission that will be self-defense, that will operate on Ukrainian territory. "

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also attacked the proposal in his remarks to staff and students at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations on Wednesday.

"This will be a direct clash between the Russian armed forces and NATO that everyone is not only trying to avoid but saying that in principle should not happen," he said.
