In the midst of the busy world observing Russia's operations in Ukraine, Australian intelligence actually sees indications of increased Chinese activity in the Indo-Pacific. President Xi Jinping is even said to be looking for a way to defeat the dominance of the United States.
Andrew Shearer, Director General of Australia's Office of National Intelligence, said Xi appeared to be planning to dominate the Indo-Pacific region. This area will be used by China to overtake the United States as a major world power.
"We see a leader who is really fighting and strengthening his country for this struggle, to overtake the United States as a major world power," Shearer said.
Shearer's remarks reinforce warnings that Russia's invasion of Ukraine could spill over into regional or global conflict.
"A disturbing new strategic convergence, between Moscow and Beijing, has developed. The risk of conflict between the great powers has increased since Russia invaded Ukraine," Shearer continued.
However, ever since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, Shearer reckons that a conflict between the great powers may still be far from predictable. He was quite surprised by the effectiveness of the Ukrainian resistance against Russian troops.
This week Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison also called on liberal democracies to stop the story of autocracies trying to shape a new world order.
Speaking at a conference hosted by the Australian Financial Review Wednesday (9/3), Shearer said that geopolitical threats in this modern era will center around technology, including the use of cyber attacks.
According to him, Australia should strengthen its cyber defenses without closing itself off from trade and information sharing.
