It is said that Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to attend the 2022 G20 Summit which will take place in Bali, Indonesia.
A number of foreign media reported on Putin's plan, as well as dismissed speculation that Russia would be expelled from the meeting.
The G20 Indonesia summit is planned to be held in Bali in October-November 2022. Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Lyudmila Vorobieva said the host invited Putin to the G20 summit.
"It depends on many things, including the Covid situation which is getting better. But so far the intention has come," he told reporters in Jakarta, Wednesday (23/3/2022).
Foreign media such as from neighboring Indonesia, namely Singapore, then India, France, and the United States (US) reported on Putin's arrival at the G20.
US media Fox News on Wednesday (23/3/2022) quoted Vorobieva as saying, "Not only the G20, many organizations are trying to get Russia out."
"The West's reaction (to the war in Ukraine) is very disproportionate," he continued.
Previously reported, the US and its Western allies are considering removing Russia's membership from the G20 group for the invasion of Ukraine.
However, any proposal to expel Russia is likely to be directly vetoed by a number of G20 countries, such as China, India and Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, from neighboring Indonesia, Channel News Asia based in Singapore reported that if Russia were excluded from the G20 it would increase the chances that some countries would be absent, citing an unnamed source.
CNA then quoted Vorobieva's comments that the G20 is a forum to discuss economic issues, not a crisis like in Ukraine.
"Of course expelling Russia from this kind of forum will not help solve economic problems. On the other hand, without Russia it will be difficult to do so."
Russian discourse replaced by Poland
France-based Reuters reported that Poland on Tuesday (22/3/2022) volunteered to replace Russia at the G20 summit. Poland told US Department of Commerce officials and claimed that the submission received a positive response.
A spokeswoman for the US Ministry of Commerce said a good meeting had been held between Poland's Minister of Economic Development and Technology Piotr Nowak and US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
“He (Raimondo) welcomed Poland's views on a number of topics, including G20 operations. However, it does not state a position on behalf of the US Government with respect to the Polish G20 proposal," the spokesperson said.
Indian media NDTV then quoted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as saying whether or not Russia was invited to the G20 summit was not an individual decision.
"When it comes to the question of how to proceed with the WTO and the G20, it is very important to discuss this question with the countries involved and not decide individually," Scholz said.
Then in another French media, namely AFP, the spotlight was on Indonesia's implied plan that would not discuss the Russian-Ukrainian invasion on the agenda of the G20 Summit.
Russia was expelled from the G8 economic group in 2014 due to the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, giving the group its name, AFP further reported.
