The figures come as Russia intensified its military offensive on Saturday with a barrage of attacks, including the shooting down of an apartment block in Kiev.
City officials warned local residents to seek cover as street fighting injured dozens in the Ukrainian capital. The mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, shared the image after the missile hit a residential building on the southwest outskirts of the capital near Zhuliany airport.
Firefighter Petro Prokopov said at least six civilians were injured and 80 people evacuated, with apartments on two floors engulfed in flames.
The Ministry of Defense later announced that two people were killed in the attack, with four others injured. Klitschko then made an announcement on Twitter, starting to impose a curfew for residents of the capital from Saturday night, from 5pm to 8am.
He said the curfew would last for two days, aimed at providing more effective defense of the capital and security of its residents.
"All civilians who are on the streets during the curfew will be considered members of the enemy's sabotage and reconnaissance groups," he said.
The 50-year-old mayor later tweeted a video of his younger brother Wladimir [also a former world boxing champion] in which he called on the world to stop this war that Russia has started or it will lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.
"This is happening in the heart of Europe and there is no time to wait," he said. Previously, it was reported that the Russian military had fired missiles targeting an apartment building in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, Saturday local time. The targeted area is close to Zhuliany Airport.
Several floors looked ravaged by the missile impact. Al Jazeera journalist Andrew Simmons from Kiev reported that the apartment building hit by the Russian missile was one of the many that were attacked.
"The level of violence that is descending from the sky through the streets of this city, is reaching its highest level. And, the voices are rising, the fear is excessive. As the clock ticks on at its next stage, this Russian invasion is an attempt to seize the capital Kiev," said Simmons. quoted from Al Jazeera, Saturday, February 26, 2022.
The Russian military said it was targeting Ukraine's military infrastructure using cruise missiles. These missiles are fired from the air and sea.
Mayor Klitschko urged Kiev residents who are in apartments to move to shelters for safety. Because, Russian troops are predicted to be aggressively attacking from the air.
