Potentially Profiting Up to Billions of Dollars, NFT Investments Must Be Careful

NFT or non-fungible tokens are potential and much in demand because they can generate billions of rupiah in profit. However, this investment in NFT must also be careful. NFT itself is a digital asset that depicts original objects such as artwork, music, or items contained in videos and games in JPEG, PNG, MP4 and other formats. These crypto-type assets cannot be duplicated or replaced.

Chairman of the Indonesian Crypto Asset Traders Association (Aspakrindo) Teguh Kurniawan Harmanda said NFT has become a recent trend because it is considered to provide large profits.

Moreover, if you look at the viral phenomenon of Ghozali Everyday, who managed to sell NFT on the OpenSea digital asset marketplace to earn billions of rupiah.

"People are interested in learning more about the benefits of NFT and the blockchain ecosystem. This is because it's been widely discussed on social media," he said in a press release, Friday (14/1).

Based on the Ghozali Everyday account on OpenSea, NFT has been sold in the form of selfies of him from the age of 18 to 22, in the period 2017-2021. Ghozali Everyday's trading volume reached 314 ethereum (ETH) as of today (14/1). Meanwhile, the price of Ethereum reached US$ 3.213 per coin, based on Coinmarketcap data.

"Ghozali proved that anyone can create works in the form of NFT digital assets. Not only as an appreciation of works, NFT can also be a new source of income for the creators," he said.

Apart from Ghozali, several celebrities in Indonesia have started selling NFTs. The latest one is Anang Hermansyah and Ashanty. Both plan to launch NFT under the name ASIX. Previously, Syahrini launched NFT last month. Syahrini managed to sell 17,800 NFT.

The price is 20 Binance USD (BUSD) or around US$ 20.05 per NFT on the Binance crypto exchange. Meanwhile, Luna Maya sold NFT in Bakery Swap in June. However, the number is very limited at only 10.

The Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, also created an NFT account on OpenSea. It aims to be an exchange for digital works of creative economy players (Ekraf) to get offers from the global market. However, Head of TokoMall Thelvia Vennieta said that people must be careful in investing in NFT. Because, like any other investment, NFT has risks.

"So, we are trying to buy NFT according to the ability of investors and using cold money," he told Katadata.co.id, Friday (14/1). He also suggests buying NFT works that you really like. Potential investors should also learn about the creators behind NFT's work, as well as its historical value.

"Investors are better off doing research first regarding the utility of the NFT," he said. Investors can see access to play-to-earn games to merchandising. This is to find out the benefits that can be obtained from NFT.

In addition, investors can view the NFT roadmap and the community of the NFT project of interest. However, keep in mind, NFT also has cybersecurity risks because it is part of a digital asset. Quoted from The Verge, NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea allow hackers to steal their users' cryptocurrencies.

Security hackers Check Point Research found a number of cases of people claiming they were hacked after obtaining NFT. Hackers can potentially drain the entire wallet of an NFT trader.

"There are vulnerabilities that prove an attack can occur by means of this NFT transaction," Check Point Research was quoted as saying by The Verge last year (13/10/2021). Check Point Research then reported the problem to OpenSea. The NFT Marketplace then fixed the problem within an hour.
