Russia's communications regulator demanded TikTok stop including military-related content in posts recommended for minors, in an announcement shared on its official Telegram channel.
Citing Reuters on Tuesday (1/3), regulator Roskomnadzor said it had identified content on the video-sharing app related to Russia's special military operations in Ukraine and was largely anti-Russian.
Russia, which has fined tech companies and hobbled their services in the country during a lengthy dispute with the Big Tech platform, has increased pressure on the site during the conflict.
It's not clear what Russian regulators mean by saying TikTok recommends content specifically for minors. The company recently said it was testing age-rated content restrictions.
TikTok did not respond to requests for comment on Roskomnadzor's demands.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, a spokesperson for TikTok also confirmed that it had restricted access to Russian state media outlets RT and Sputnik across the European Union, after the organizations were sanctioned by the European Union. Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc also blocked access to the two outlets.
For your information, this application has been widely used to document events and share news leading up to and during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. That includes the dissemination of misleading footage of the conflict.
