Hanud Buk-M3 System Claimed To Be Able To Shoot Down HIMARS Rockets In The Sky Donbass

Sources from western media, reported in the past few days that the Russian military has suffered significant losses due to long-range artillery strikes M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) supplied by the United States to Ukraine. Well, apart from the claims circulating, recently there was interesting news that came from the Russian media.

Reporting from radiosputnik.ria.ru (26/7/2022), it is said that Russian Arhanud officers from Group O (Brave) admit that the HIMARS rocket is the most difficult target to beat. However, the officer said his unit continued to adapt and study HIMARS' attack patterns, and said he had managed to shoot down more than one HIMARS rocket in the Donbass sky.

Still from the same source, the executioner who was able to intercept HIMARS was the Buk-M3 missile system, where HIMARS was shot down after being detected at an altitude of about 22 km within 10 seconds.

Quoting from armyrecognition.com (1/5/2022), in order to protect Russian fighter jets advancing in four Ukraine, Russian troops deployed two anti-aircraft missile divisions armed with Buk-M2 (NATO reporting name SA-17 Grizzly), Tor-M1 (NATO SA-15 Gauntlet) and most recently the use of the Buk-M3 which is the latest generation of mobile air defense systems in the BUK family.

The Buk-M3 is a medium-range guided missile system which is a modernized version of the Buk-M2 system. The Buk-M3 is equipped with advanced electronic components and a new, lethal missile, and can be considered an entirely new system.

The probability of destroying the Buk-M3 target is said to be 0.9999 and its maximum destruction range has been increased by 25 kilometers and is now up to 70 kilometers. The Buk-M3 is capable of destroying all types of aerial targets from a distance of 2.5 to 70 km, at a speed of 3,000 meters per second at an altitude of 15 meters to 35 km. The Buk-M3 missile has been optimized to intercept low-flying cruise missiles but can also strike land and sea targets.

The Buk-M3 missile battery can track and strike up to 36 targets simultaneously, while the 9R31M missile is claimed to be capable of bringing down all available flying objects, including high-maneuvering moving targets, even during active electronic jamming.

While HIMARS, developed by Lockheed Martin Missiles and BAE Systems, is used to rely on 227 mm caliber rockets. The larger the caliber, in addition to a larger warhead, the firing range is further. The M142 HIMARS can carry 6 x 227mm M270 series rockets or 1 MGM-140 ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) missile.

From the specifications, HIMARS rockets can reach targets ranging from 2 to 300 kilometers. As the driving platform is a 5-Ton FMTV truck. The truck can travel at a speed of 85 km per hour with a range of up to 480 kilometers.
