Ukrainian Warship Escapes Dramatically From Barrage of Russian Artillery

The Ukrainian Navy is, on paper, out of arms. But his remaining battleships proved to be shrewd foes for the much larger Russian Navy. New drone footage shows one, Yuri Olefirenk, escaping a massive Russian artillery attack on June 3, 2022.

A dramatic video, from Russian sources, shows a Ukrainian warship being attacked by artillery. At least 16 shells were seen landing near the ship, some less than 200 feet away. However the ship appears to have escaped, substantially undamaged.

The footage appears to be from a drone used to spy on Russian artillery. As is often the case with the fog of war, there remains uncertainty about the ultimate fate of the Ukrainian warship. However, Naval News has been able to attest to key aspects of the video, confirming the ship's presence there hours before the attack.

Moreover, the video does not show the ship being hit directly, or sinking. This is important because, if it sinks, Russian sources will likely point it out.

The ship, Yuri Olefirenko, was a Project 773 Polnocny-C-class landing craft. Built in Poland in 1970, it served with the Soviet Navy during the Cold War. Then the ship was transferred to the Ukrainian Navy in 1994, but was later taken over by the Russian Navy when they annexed Crimea in 2014. Then returning to the Ukrainian Navy, the ship has been one of the few large ships since.

There are reports from Russian sources that the ship was captured again by the Russian Navy during the invasion. But with the fog of war, these reports seem erroneous.

The Ukrainian navy was much smaller than the Russian navy in the area and the ships were scattered, many of which were not ideally positioned for the war that followed. Geography is not on their side. This caused Russia's largest warship, the Krivak Hetman Sahaidachny-class frigate, to be sunk. And several warships and warships were captured. Yuri Olefirenko apparently, escaped within 100 days of entering the war, the ship is still active.

Although the surface fleet of the Ukrainian Navy was largely wiped out, Ukraine found other ways to counter Russian naval dominance. The Ukrainian Navy's Bayraktar TB-2 drone and land-based anti-ships scored a huge success. The sinking of the Russian aircraft carrier, the Slava Moskva class cruiser, was hit by a Neptune missile on April 13.

In the port city of Berdyansk, historically important for grain exports, Ukraine managed to blow up another Russian ship. The Alligator class landing craft is similar to (but bigger than) Yuri Olefirenko. This ship appears to be carrying ammunition. The ship sank, and with more Russian landing craft damaged.

Now more anti-ship missiles are joining the ranks of Ukraine, delivered from the stockpiles of NATO countries. The tide is slowly turning. But for a surface ship like Yuri Olefirenko, survival is still the name of the game.
