Just as Indonesia has released several prototypes of the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), neighboring Malaysia has also pioneered the same thing. Labeled “Kawbra,” the four-wheeled UGV was recently unveiled at the DSA 2022 (28 – 31 March 2022) event in Kuala Lumpur.
Designed by the Science and Technology Research Institute for Defense (STRIDE), Kawbra is dedicated to the operation of the Malaysian armed forces.
STRIDE, which is under the Ministry of Defence, started developing this tire wheel UGV prototype in 2019. According to STRIDE, Kawbra is the first project of its kind in Malaysia.
Quoted from Janes.com, the work on Kawbra was carried out in collaboration with local digital engineering company Dream Edge. According to information, the Kawbra field trial will be held at the end of this year.
The Kawbra is designed for limited surveillance, reconnaissance, logistics and combat tasks. For combatant duties, STRIDE has developed a separate project for a 7.62 mm caliber FN MAG medium machine gun mount that carries remote control technology.
The Kawbra is powered by an electric motor which allows for four hours of operation and a maximum speed of 50 km per hour. Talking about payload, Kawbra has a payload of up to 200 kg and a total vehicle weight of 400 kg.
To support mobility, this UGV is equipped with infrared and GPS sensors, and has cameras at all angles. The Kawbra has a length of 2.5 meters and when the battery is fully charged, Malaysia's first UGV can shoot up to a distance of 40 km.
