North Korea condemned South Korea's defense minister's remarks about its ability to attack North Korea and warned it would destroy key targets in Seoul if South Korea took dangerous military action such as countermeasures.
Citing Reuters on Sunday (3/4), Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said in a statement that the North Korean defense minister's remarks further exacerbated inter-Korean relations and military tensions on the Korean peninsula, KCNA reported.
It came after South Korea's minister, Suh Wook, said on Friday that his country's military had a range of missiles with significantly increased range, accuracy and power, with "the ability to accurately and quickly hit any target in North Korea."
Suh also said the ministry would actively support the military to ensure it has the capability to respond to North Korea's missile threats. He called the north the enemy.
Kim, deputy department director of the Workers' Party of Korea Central Committee, also said the country would reconsider many things and that South Korea may face serious threats because of such statements.
In a separate statement on Sunday, Pak Jong Chon, secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, said North Korea would direct all its military might to destroy the main target in Seoul and the South Korean army mercilessly if Korean soldiers engage in dangerous military action such as a pre-emptive strike. .
North, did not specify where it sees the main target in Seoul.
Tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen sharply in recent weeks after North Korea tested two ballistic missiles on February 26 and March 4 involving a new ICBM system the country is developing, and last week carried out its first full ICBM test since 2017.
Following the tests, the United States on Friday imposed sanctions on five entities accused of providing support for North Korea's development of weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.
Tensions could rise further as South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol takes office next month, who has said in the past that a preemptive strike may be the only way to counter North Korea's new hypersonic missiles if they appear ready for the near future. attack.
Yoon has called for increased military deterrence, including by strengthening ties with the United States, and has pledged to seek to establish a permanent three-way dialogue channel between South Korea, North Korea and the United States.
