Joe Biden Calls Russia Genocide in Ukraine

US President Joe Biden emphatically said that Russia had indeed committed genocide in Ukraine. According to him, the evidence currently available shows that Russia was deliberately removing Ukrainian citizens.

Biden's remarks came after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia would continue its operations and achieve its goals in a rhythmic and calm manner.

"Yes, I call it genocide because it's becoming increasingly clear that Putin is just trying to erase the idea of being Ukrainian. The evidence is mounting," Biden said, as quoted by Reuters.

Speaking at an ethanol plant in Iowa Tuesday (12/4), Biden still feels that the genocide decision should be made by the courts. However, for him the genocide had already happened.

"We'll let lawyers decide internationally whether it's eligible or not, but it seems that way to me," Biden continued.

This is the first time Biden has accused Russia of genocide. Previously, Biden had only called Putin a war criminal.

Biden's accusations are certainly based on the fact that many cities in Ukraine are littered with the bodies of civilians. Ukrainian authorities have also reported that Russian military operations have been accompanied by killings, torture and rape.

Russia's military operation in Ukraine has lasted nearly seven weeks and is the biggest attack on a European country since World War II.

More than 4.6 million Ukrainians have fled since February 24. Thousands of civilians have reportedly lost their lives since then.

Russia says it is currently aiming to seize more territory on behalf of the two separatist provinces, Luhansk and Donetsk. Russia's target area is the port city of Mariupol, which is currently under siege by Russia.

Ukraine says tens of thousands of civilians have been trapped inside the city without food or water supplies. Russian troops are even said to have blocked a humanitarian aid convoy.
