Russian Foreign Minister Says There Is Danger Of Ukraine Getting Nuclear Weapons

Russia's foreign minister told a Geneva disarmament meeting on Tuesday that Kyiv had been trying to acquire nuclear weapons, calling this a real danger that needed to be prevented.

"Ukraine still has Soviet technology and means of delivering such weapons," Sergei Lavrov told the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament in a pre-recorded speech.

"We cannot fail to respond to this real danger," he said.

He delivered his speech in front of a number of diplomats as many diplomats including France and Britain staged a walk-out protest against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

They stood in a circle outside the gathering during Lavrov's speech, holding Ukrainian flags.

Lavrov was supposed to attend the session in person but the visit was cancelled, with Russia accusing unidentified EU countries of blocking its flight path.

At the same meeting, Ukraine's foreign minister accused Russia of committing war crimes through shootings in his country and called for a special meeting to discuss Russian aggression and weapons of mass destruction.

Earlier in the session, the president organized a minute of silence for the victims of the fighting in Ukraine.
