Failed to Seize Kyiv, Ukraine Says Russia is Considering the Korean scenario!

Russia is considering a Korean scenario for Ukraine and splitting the country in two after failing to capture the capital Kyiv also toppled its government, Ukraine's military intelligence chief revealed.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin will try to impose a dividing line between unoccupied and occupied territories in our country," said General Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Intelligence Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry, Sunday (27/3), as quoted by Al Jazeera.

“This is an attempt to create North Korea and South Korea in Ukraine. After all, he (Putin) is clearly not in a position to swallow up the whole country."

The two Koreas are still technically at war after the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty, sealing off the division of the Korean Peninsula by an impenetrable border.

After more than four weeks of conflict, Russia has failed to capture a major Ukrainian city, and Moscow signaled Friday it would reduce its ambitions to focus on securing the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.

In the area, Russian-backed separatists have been battling Ukrainian troops in the Donbas for the past eight years.

"The invaders will try to unite the occupied territories into one quasi-state entity, which will oppose an independent Ukraine," Budanov said.

"We have already seen attempts to create parallel authorities in the occupied territories and force people to give up Ukrainian currency," he added.

Budanov also mentioned that Russia tried to install a land corridor to Crimea, but that plan has so far been hindered by Russia's failure to seize the port city of Mariupol.

The city on the Sea of Azov has been under siege by Russian forces for more than three weeks and is facing relentless bombardment. However, Mariupol authorities last week rejected an ultimatum from Russian troops to surrender.
