Germany Holds China Responsible for Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock holds China accountable in connection with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This was done in a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

China on Friday abstained from vetoing a draft UN Security Council resolution condemning Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. A move that the West sees as a victory because it demonstrates Russia's international isolation.

While China's foreign ministry said Wang said China supports NATO, the European Union and Russia in continuing the dialogue to build a balanced, effective and sustainable European security mechanism.

"China does not support the use of sanctions to solve problems and opposes unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law," Wang said in a statement issued on Sunday.

"We believe that the Council should contribute to a political solution to the current crisis, rather than trigger new confrontations," Wang said.

He added that China had prevented the use of force and sanctioned Russia's actions in Ukraine.
