Arab coalition air strikes on targets north of the Yemeni capital Sanaa have
killed Houthi leader Major General Abdullah Qassem al-Junaid. This news has
been conveyed according to a report by the television channel, Al Hadath as
reported by Al Arabiya, Tuesday (18/1/2022).
The Arab Coalition is bombarding Yemen after Houthi forces launched attacks
on two targets in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) capital Abu Dhabi on Monday
morning.
The attack killed three people and injured six. A spokesman for the Arab
Coalition said in a statement that the attacks were launched in response to
threats and military needs.
A construction site at the extension of Abu Dhabi's new airport, and an oil
facility caught fire on Monday morning. Police said the incident may have
been caused by a drone.
UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed later described the incident
as a terrorist attack and a malicious criminal escalation.
He added that they would not be left alone. The fires are an example of a
rare attack on UAE soil. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs
condemned the attack in a statement released on Monday.
"The Kingdom (Saudi Arabia) affirms its full stand with the brotherhood of
the United Arab Emirates in the face of anything that threatens its security
and stability," the statement said.
"The kingdom also demonstrates that this terrorist act, which is behind the
evil forces of the Houthi terrorist militia, reaffirms the seriousness of
this terrorist group and its threat to security, peace and stability in the
region and the world," the statement continued.
The UAE and Saudi Arabia have been embroiled in Yemen's civil war since the
Arab Coalition intervened in 2015. Saudi Arabia regularly faces drone
attacks from the Houthis.
Military operations against Iran-backed militias have intensified in recent
weeks. On Monday, January 10, it was announced that the coalition had
retaken the Shabwa district from the Houthis.
