The Washington government ordered the families of US diplomats to leave Ukraine. The reason is because of the threat of a Russian military attack.
According to the latest travel advisory from the US State Department, some embassy staff were also allowed to leave Ukraine voluntarily.
"There are reports that Russia is planning significant military action against Ukraine," the US State Department said in a statement Sunday.
"Allowed the voluntary departure of US direct recruits (USDH) and ordered the departure of eligible family members (EFM)."
According to the travel advisory, Americans are once again strongly advised not to travel to Ukraine.
"While those already in the country were told to consider leaving now using commercial or other personal transport options," the travel advisory said.
The US had previously warned its citizens that they should not anticipate that there would be a US government-sponsored evacuation if war broke out in Ukraine. The government suggested that they use commercially available flights instead.
Moscow has repeatedly denied allegations that Russia is planning an invasion of Ukraine. Moscow described the claims as a baseless attempt to instill "hysteria".
According to the Kremlin, it is the West that has stoked tensions in Ukraine by supplying weapons to Kiev – which is embroiled in the “Frozen Conflict” with the self-proclaimed southeastern Donbass region – and intensifying the buildup of NATO troops in Eastern Europe.
